What Is Computable? What Is Feasibly Computable? A Physicist's Viewpoint

چکیده
In this chapter, we show how the questions of what is computable and what is feasibly computable can be viewed from the viewpoint of physics: what is computable within the current physics? what is computable if we assume – as many physicists do – that no final physical theory is possible? what is computable if we consider data processing, i.e., computations based on physical inputs? Our physicsbased analysis of these questions leads to some unexpected answers, both positive and negative. For example, we show that under the no-physical-theory-is-perfect assumption, almost all problems are feasibly solvable – but not all of them. 1 What Is Computable? What Is Feasibly Computable? Different Aspects of These Questions The two main questions of theoretical computer science. One of the main objectives of theoretical computer science is to answer the following two fundamental questions: • The first question is: which tasks are computable in principle? • Once we learned that a task is, in principle, computable, a natural next question is: is this task feasibly computable, i.e., can we perform the corresponding computations in reasonable time? These questions are usually considered from the viewpoint of a computer scientist. From the viewpoint of a computer scientist, computation is a solution to a well-defined task, performed on a well-defined computational devices. As a result, when formulating and analyzing the above problems, computer scientists usually Vladik Kreinovich and Olga Kosheleva University of Texas at El Paso, 500 W. On the Weight of Computations
One of the Grand Challenges to computer science is to understand what is and is not feasibly computable. Recursive function theory clarified what is and is not effectively computable and in the process extended our understanding of Goedel incompleteness results about the limits of the power of formal mathematical methods. Since computing is universal and encompasses the power of mathematics, th...

Quisani: Hello. It's that time of the year again when we have a discussion, isn't it? Author: Come on in. It is a busy time but I am happy to see you. Q: I am afraid my mood is rather critical today. A: That is all right. Speak your mind. Q: It is about computability and decidability. It seems to me that logicians' computability has little to do with real computability. Some so-called computabl...
متن کاملOn Polynomial Time Computable Numbers
The computable numbers have already appeared in Turing’s paper [6] in which he defined the Turing machine. Turing defined them in real numbers, the definition is naturally extended to complex numbers. Rice showed that the whole complex computable numbers forms an algebraically closed field [4]. The field is strictly larger than the algebraic number fields Q since it contains transcendental numb...
متن کاملSome Thoughts on Hypercomputation
Hypercomputation is a relatively new branch of computer science that emerged from the idea that the Church–Turing Thesis, which is supposed to describe what is computable and what is noncomputable, cannot possible be true. Because of its apparent validity, the Church–Turing Thesis has been used to investigate the possible limits of intelligence of any imaginable life form, and, consequently, th...
متن کاملOn the Intellectual Terrain around Npt
In this paper we view Pd,NP as the problem which symbolizes the attempt to understand what is and is not feasibly computable. The paper shortly reviews the history of the developments from Göde1's 1956 letter asking for the computational complexity of finding proofs of theorems, through computational complexity, the exploration of complete problems for NP and PSPACE, through the results of stru...
